Zhongxi was born in northeastern China into a family of traditional musicians. His first teachers were his father and his elder brother. He graduated from the College of Performing Arts in his native province in China and now lives in Vancouver. He has performed as a soloist in Japan, Hong Kong, London, and the US. He teaches traditional music to up and coming young performers. He learned Scottish bagpipes, and is a member of the Delta Police Pipe Band.
